In coal mining the underground water being discharged from the holding adjoining strata is required to be separated from the active mining areas. The
underground water is to be discharged to surface to support safe and efficient mining operations. Environmental concerns, law, and regulation require
coal mines only to discharge water of an acceptable water quality. Depending on the water availability and quality, it is re-used after suitable
treatment for domestic purpose, process applications on site such as workshops, dust suppression, coal handling plants, and other mining related
activities.
For various working mines in ECL it has been observed that the water being discharged has the potential to be used for fulfilling the domestic and
industrial water demand. With an aim to utilise the mine discharged water the water being discharged is collected in natural or man made reservoirs and
treated as per requirement to ensure its potability for domestic use as per the Indian Standards. Mine water is also discharged to augment the local
water bodies after due checks and verifications as per environmental standards so that it is used by nearby villagers.
In ECL mine discharged water is accordingly treated and then released for different purposes ensuring the quality standard for human consumption and
other use.
In ECL during last three years, pressure filters and electrochlorinators of various capacities have been installed at various locations for treatment and
disinfection of mine discharged water as per required standards.
A sample film made at Kunustoria Area of ECL is worth viewing as testimony of ECL’s efforts.
ECL makes water as a subsidiary product of mine beside coal and contributes to the nature conservation cycle of water.
